The Ever Valid Exchange At The Cross at Calvary and the Application of the Blood!

Pastor Toks Oshokoya

The Ever Valid Exchange At The Cross at Calvary and the Application of the Blood!

Hebrews 10: 10 – 17

“…By the which we are SANCTIFIED THROUGH THE OFFERING of the body of Jesus Christ ONCE FOR ALL!

……. But this man, after he had offered ONE SACRIFICE FOR SINS FOR EVER, sat down on the right hand of God; From henceforth expecting till his enemies be made his footstool…..

For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified….

Whereof the Holy Ghost also is a witness to us: for after that he had said before,

This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, saith the Lord, I will put my laws into their hearts, and in their minds will I write them; And their sins and iniquities will I remember no more. Now where remission of these is, there is NO MORE OFFERING FOR SIN”

Jesus made, by one single offering, unlike that of the high priests of the old covenant,  a COMPLETE ALL SUFFICIENT SACRIFICE!

Validity:

Forever! Like the honey in the natural has no expiry date, so is the blood sacrifice of Jesus.

Does it cover for only those who lived before He died physically 2000 years ago? No!

Does it cover for just at the first time that I got saved? No!

It actually covers FOR TIME AND ETERNITY!

The scriptures say that the Lamb of God slain before the foundation of the World!

Hence it covers from eternity through time sandwiched in between and to eternity!

I have a divine right to apply the validity and effectiveness for NOW!

SO FAITH IS NOW!

Scope of Influence:

Everyone who has been sanctified. Who are the sanctified?

Those who choose to believe. Those who have been sanctified are being perfected.

Perfection here implies full development, ongoing growth into maturity of godliness.

Not necessarily sinless perfection, ref: Ephesians 4: 12, 13. Why? Because of His nature…He is kind and full of mercy Luke 6: 35, 36.

So the validity must cover for our process of ongoing sanctification.

Yes, we are saved! We are being saved! We shall be saved!

Scope of Effectiveness:

Every area and requirements for godly life for those being sanctified! In every area of the life of those who choose to trust in Him.

Nothing is remaining. One complete all sufficient work to cover every aspect of requirement.

The work of accomplishing of full redemption have been completed.

The accomplishing has been done – THE POSITIONAL ASPECT OF THE TRUTH

Our appropriating it is progressive – PRACTICAL ASPECT OF THE TRUTH

At the cross there was a divinely ordained exchange.

Jesus received the evil due to us, that we might receive the good due to Him.

The Exchange At The Cross

Jesus accomplished a complete work of sacrifice for us at Calvary.

Who was Barabbas? He was a felon. He was set free at the expense of Jesus, the sinless.

The love of God towards us is revealed by the price He was ready to pay for our sins.

The price was the blood of Jesus.

The perfect foreshadow is accounted for in Leviticus 16.

The description of the Work of Atonement.

There is no single english word so three words were combined to give it full meaning.

“At-one-ment” is Atonement which in Hebrew imply to cover.

The established principles of Atonement

  1. Substitutional – the “offering” replaces the “offerer” (the guilty one) in place of death.
  2. God’s law of the requirement for sin must be executed.
  3. The offering of the sacrifice must be sinless.
  4. The act and guilt must be removed or evacuated from the sight of the Law

Leviticus 16:7

He shall take the TWO GOATS and present them before the Lord at the door of the Tent of Meeting.

Aaron shall cast lots on the TWO GOATS

– one lot for the Lord,

– the other lot for Azazel or removal (of the sins of the people)

And Aaron shall bring the GOAT on which the Lord’s lot fell and offer him as a SIN OFFERING.

But the GOAT on which the lot fell for Azazel or removal shall be presented alive before the Lord to make atonement over him, that he may be let GO INTO THE WILDERNESS for Azazel.

In effect, two goats are required

The Sin Offering Goat is for FORGIVENESS – this is God side. To cover or atone

The Scape Goat is for REMOVAL OF ACT & GUILT – this is the Human side. To sanctify.

In Jesus, the two fold work was perfected!

Eight Sure Benefits of The Exchange

1.   Jesus was punished that we might beforgiven (Isaiah 53:4–5)

  1. Jesus was wounded that we might be healed (Matt. 8:16–17)
  2. Jesus was made sin with our sinfulness that we might be made righteous with His righteousness  (Is. 53:10; 2 Cor. 5:21)
  3. Jesus tasted death for us that we might share His life (Heb. 2:9)
  4. Jesus was made a curse that we might receive the blessing (Gal. 3:13–14).
  5. Jesus endured our poverty that we might share His abundance (2 Cor. 8:9 [2 Cor. 9:8; Deut. 28:47–48])
  6. Jesus endured our shame that we might share His glory (Matt. 27:35–36 [Heb. 2:10])
  7. Jesus endured our rejection that we might have His acceptance (Matt. 27:45–51 [Eph. 1:3–6])

How To Appropriate The Benefit of The Cross – Blood Of Jesus

A. We overcome Satan by the blood and the word of our testimony (Rev. 12:11).

What do I mean by “testimony”?

Revelation 19: 10b

I am thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren that have the testimony of Jesus: worship God: for the TESTIMONY OF JESUS IS THE SPIRIT OF PROPHECY.

PROPHECY is the declaration or verbal affirmation of what Jesus has spoken as promise or done.

Therefore we declare, confess or profess!

Hebrews 3: 1

Wherefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our PROFESSION (CONFESSION in alignment), Christ Jesus;

Hebrews 10: 23

Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; (for he is faithful that promised;)

Note in addition, we “love not our life unto death” means it is more important to do God’s will than to stay alive.

Confession:

“I overcome Satan when I testify personally to what the Word of God says the blood of Jesus does for me.”

THE ORDINANCE OF THE PASSOVER (Ex. 12:21–23 [1 Cor. 5:7])

1. Blood must be transferred from the basin to door of home

2. “Hyssop” is our testimony.

What is the “hyssop”?

HYSSOP

Psalms 51:2

Wash me throughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin.

For I acknowledge my transgressions: and my sin is ever before me. Against thee, thee only, have I sinned,

and done this evil in thy sight:

that thou mightest be justified when thou speakest,

and be clear when thou judgest. ………

Purge me with HYSSOP, and I SHALL BE CLEAN: WASH ME, and I shall be whiter than snow.

3. The blood protects only the obedient (1 Pet. 1:1–2)

4. The blood is of no effect until it is applied by testimony (Rev. 12:11; Heb. 3:1)

5. Our Passover Lamb is Jesus Christ (1 Cor. 5:7)

Remember that even after the Passover, Pharoah and his army still pursued the redeemed Isreal to the brink!

How Do We Transfer The Blood of Jesus From The Basin To Your Life?

The Sevenfold application of blood of Jesus

As a perfect fore-shadow for our redemption, the instruction was given in the OT.

Leviticus 16:14

And he shall take of the blood of the bullock, and sprinkle it with his finger upon the mercy seat eastward; and before the mercy seat shall he SPRINKLE of THE BLOOD with his finger SEVEN TIMES!

Leviticus 16: 14 – 19

He shall take of the bull’s blood and sprinkle it with his finger on the front [the east side] of the mercy seat, and before the mercy seat he shall SPRINKLE of THE BLOOD with his finger SEVEN TIMES.

Then shall he kill the goat of the SIN OFFERING that is for [the sins of] the people and bring its blood within the veil [into the Holy of Holies] and do with that blood as he did with the blood of the bull, and SPRINKLE it on the MERCY SEAT and before the mercy seat.

Thus he shall MAKE ATONEMENT for the Holy Place because of the uncleanness of the Israelites and because of their transgressions, even all their sins; and so shall he do for the Tent of Meeting, that remains among them in the midst of their uncleanness. ……….

And he shall SPRINKLE some of the blood on it with his fingers SEVEN TIMES and CLEANSE it and hallow it from the uncleanness of the Israelites.

How are we sure that Jesus blood satisfied the entire requirement?

His blood was sprinkled as was required seven times. The 7 Sprinkling:

  1. Prayer of agony in the Garden of Gethsemene. He dropped sweat and BLOOD!
  1. At the house of the high priest. He was violently reviled. He was struck maliciously across the face with rod. He spat BLOOD!
  1. They gleefully, with much force, pulled at His beard for showing Himself as a leader of some sort. They plucked His beard from the roots. He BLED!                            Isaiah 50:6 “I gave my back to the smiters, and my cheeks to them that plucked    off the hair: I hid not my face from shame and…”
  1. Pontus Pilate handed Him over to the Roman Soldiers to scourge. Beaten in a most sadistic way with cat-o-nine whips. The whip had small bones and sharp pieces of blade metals strung into it. It tore His flesh. His BLOOD was splattered!
  1. They mocked Him saying “so you are a king?”. They weaved a crown of thorns and forcibly pushed it down His heard. They beat on His badly bruised head. His head got swollen. His scalp became sore in many points.                                          He BLED from the head down!                                                                                  Isaiah 53 “…His visage was marred more than any man…”
  1. At the Golgotha, He was nailed at both wrists and both legs with big iron nails.   His BLOOD gushed out and flowed!
  1. At His giving up the ghost, He exhaled the famous words “It is finished”. The Roman Garrison Commander would not believe that He had died, so he instructed that it be verified. A soldier therefore thrust a spear at His side just below the heart, I believe. It was divinely arranged! So the necessary SEVENTH SPRINKLING was accomplished!                                                                           BLOOD and water effused out of His punctured side.

God has declared in Leviticus 17 : 11

For the LIFE OF THE FLESH (SOUL) IS IN THE BLOOD: and I have given it to you upon the ALTAR to make an ATONEMENT for your souls: for it is the blood that maketh an atonement for the soul.

Isaiah 53: 4, 5, 10, 12

“Surely he hath borne our griefs,

and carried our sorrows:

yet we did esteem him stricken,

smitten of God, and afflicted.

But he was wounded for our transgressions,

he was bruised for our iniquities:

the chastisement of our peace was upon him;

and with his stripes we are healed”

“Yet it pleased the Lord to bruise him; he hath put him to grief: when thou shalt make his SOUL AN OFFERING FOR SIN, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the Lord shall prosper in his hand.

He shall see of the travail of his soul, and shall be satisfied:”

“…because he hath POURED OUT HIS SOUL UNTO DEATH:

and he was numbered with the transgressors;

and he bare the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors”

ATONEMENT was made for our souls, completely in the SEVEN FOLD ways required as follows:

1. Redemption:

being bought back

a. We must be in Christ

(Eph. 1:7)

b. Redeemed by Christ’s blood (1 Pet. 1:18–19)

c. Let redeemed say so

(Ps. 107:2)

Confession:

“Through the blood of Jesus, I have been redeemed out of the hand of the devil.”

2. Cleansing

a. Only through continuing walking in the light = continuing fellowship

(1 John 1:7)

b. Plead for the blood to be applied (Ps. 51:7)

Confession:

“While I walk in the light, the blood of Jesus cleanses me now and continually from all sin.”

3. Justification

a. To make righteous

(Rom. 5:9)

b. “Just-as-if-I’d” never sinned

c. Covered with a robe of righteousness (Is. 61:10)

Confession:

“Through the blood of Jesus, I am justified, acquitted, not guilty, reckoned righteous, made righteous, ‘just-as-if-I’d’ never sinned.”

4. Sanctification

a. Set apart from sin and made holy (Heb. 13:12 [Heb. 12:10])

Confession:

“Through the blood of Jesus, I am sanctified, made holy, set apart to God, separated from sin, made holy with God’s holiness.”

5. Life

a. The life is in the blood

(Lev. 17.11)

b. Communion

(John 6:53–57 [1 Cor. 10:16])

c. Until He comes

(1 Cor. 11:23–26)

d. No past but the cross, no future but His coming

Confession:

“Lord Jesus, when we receive Your blood, in it we receive Your life—the life of God—divine, eternal, endless life. Thank You, Lord.”

6. Intercession

Eight things to which we have come (Heb. 12:22–24)

(1) Mount Zion

(2) Heavenly Jerusalem

(3) Innumerable company of angels

(4) Church of the first-born

(5) God, the Judge of all

(6) Old Testament saints

(7) Jesus the Mediator

(8) The sprinkled blood of Jesus

Confession:

“Thank You, Lord, that even when I cannot pray, the Blood of Jesus is pleading for me in heaven.”

7. Access (Heb. 10:19–22)

a. Confession

(Heb. 3:1; 4:14; 10:23)

b. Approach with boldness (Lev. 16:13–14)

Confessions:

“Thank You, Lord, that through the sprinkled blood of Jesus, I have access into Your presence, into the holiest place in the universe.”

“We overcome Satan by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of our testimony and we do not love our lives unto death.”

The Communion:

The redeemed are still pursued by their enemies…

Pursued to the brink of The Red Sea!

Oh, the water is called “Red Sea”? Why?

There is a deliberate divine plan to pattern how the devil, his agents, sins, sickness and curses have determined, like Pharoah the taskmaster and the Egyptian army, to pursue the children of Israel to the brink. The Sea is called “Red” to remind us that even after salvation, satan and all God’s enemies, will not give up but follow to the APPLICATION OF THE BLOOD OF SPRINKLING!

That is why the Lord said, do this often to relive the validity and the ever fresh effectiveness of the victory!

Like Moses, God says “Look, the Egyptian army you see advancing menacingly towards you today, by tomorrow you will see them no more!”

Moses was vacillating, confused and cried but God says “Why cry? Speak…stretch out your rod of power!”

What is our own “rod of power” today?

Our testimony, our confession of His accomplished work on Calvary!

Let us move to the Red Sea of communion of the Lord’s body and blood and dare the enemies of our souls to attempt to cross over with us!

Exodus 15: 1 – 4

“…I will sing unto the Lord, for He hath triumphed gloriously:

the horse and his rider hath He thrown into the sea.

The Lord is my strength and song, and He is become my salvation:

He is my God, and I will prepare Him an habitation; my father’s God, and I will exalt Him. The Lord is a Man of war: the Lord is His name.

Pharaoh’s chariots and his host hath He cast into the sea:

his chosen captains also are drowned in the Red sea.

The depths have covered them: they sank into the bottom as a stone”

The Exchange At The Cross

At the cross there was a divinely ordained exchange.

Jesus received the evil due to us, that we might receive the good due to Him

Aspects Of The Exchange

  1. A. Jesus was punished that we might be forgiven (Is. 53:4–5)

  4. Jesus tasted death for us that we might share His life (Heb. 2:9)
  5. E. Jesus was made a curse that we might receive the blessing (Gal. 3:13–14).

Seven indications of a curse on one’s life:

  1. Mental and emotional breakdown
  2. Repeated or chronic sicknesses (esp. hereditary)
  3. Repeated miscarriages or related female problems
  4. Breakdown of marriage—family alienation
  5. Continuing financial insufficiency (esp. when income appears to be sufficient)
  6. “Accident prone”
  7. Suicides or unnatural deaths
