‘Where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them”
No matter how mature we seem to have grown, we tend to still worry about numbers of persons around and for us.
Remember King David? The man after God’s Own Heart? One hand he declared at a time – Psalm 27: 1- 7 “The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear?the Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? When the wicked, even mine enemies and my foes, came upon me to eat up my flesh, they stumbled and fell. Though an host should encamp against me, my heart shall not fear: though war should rise against me, in this will I be confident…….. For in the time of trouble He shall hide me in His pavilion:in the secret of his tabernacle shall He hide me; He shall set me up upon a rock. And now shall mine head be lifted up above mine enemies round about me:..”
However, in 1 Chronicles 21: 1-3“And Satan stood up against Israel, and provoked David to number Israel. And David said to Joab and to the rulers of the people, Go, number Israel from Beersheba even to Dan; and bring the number of them to me, that I may know it. And Joab answered, The Lord make his people an hundred times so many more as they be: but, my lord the king, are they not all my lord’s servants? why then doth my lord require this thing? why will he be a cause of trespass to Israel?”
Suddenly David wants to know how many people that he had and could count on!
Looks like always, it is Satan that is the instigator of fear, feeling of abandonment and inadequacy, at some stages in our lives. Then we tend to loose our focus on God and start to foolishly count on the people… looking for numbers! How sad.
We tend to place too much emphasis on crowds, on statistics, on the size of a particular group or movement. We, every one of us, are too easily influenced by the “mob mentality” and the desire to be doing what everyone else is doing and going in the same direction everyone else is going – ‘the bandwagon phenomenon’.
But God is not concerned about numbers or popular approval. As Jonathan observed before facing an entire army of the Philistines with only his armor-bearer beside him. 1 Samuel 14:6 “there is no restraint to the LORD to save by many or by few”
For this reason the sixteenth century preacher John Knox contended, “A man with God is always in the majority.”
Here Jesus promises his presence in even the smallest gathering in His name. He is just as much interested in the struggling church plant as He is in the megachurch. He is just as present and active in the small prayer meeting as He is in the Christian conference that fills a stadium.
The context of this passage, it is important to note, is a gathering for the sake of ironing out personal differences and possible offenses in the church. So Jesus is not just present when we feel the emotional high of singing praises; He is also present in the nitty-gritty work of personal admonitions and church discipline.
Jesus is concerned about people, but He is not anxious about numbers. Jesus will bless the smallest group that is faithfully seeking His glory and obeying His Word.
It is important to remind ourselves here that God is not a Politician. He is not looking for votes, neither is He a Democrat! God is not right because of numbers. God alone is God!
Secondly, God is not in competition with anyone, created or whatever! He is God by Himself. No one like Him!
He created us in His Image and has made us in His Likeness. He has formed us to be conformable unto His Son, Jesus, Who took on the whole world as it were without wavering.
Socio-Political Life – A Word Of Caution, Sirs/Mas:Let us be spiritually vigilant about our most precious possessions – our hearts and souls in these kind of times.
Be involved in politics but remain a christian! Ensure that godly objectivity rule your heart and actions. Again, I restate it that It is important to remind ourselves here that God is not a Politician. He is not looking for votes, neither is He a Democrat! God is not right because of numbers. God alone is God! Secondly, God is not in competition with anyone, created or whatever! He is God by Himself. No one like Him!He created us in His Image and has made us in His Likeness. He has formed us to be conformable unto His Son, Jesus.
Ordinarily, our Basic Educational System, right from kindergarten stage had initiated its own early attack against our soul formation by training us to always compete for everything – marks, display of talents, parental affluence and positions in class. Now, the overcharged political climate, is pummeling our minds again, all over!We carelessly join in the fray, without caution, to support, attack, ridicule or praise – depending on who we are supporting. Some believers seem to have totally lost their bearings, so as much, as they are willingly and eagerly ready to destroy fellow believers and leaders in the Body of Christ because of soulless politicians! I shudder at the use of very foul and base vocabularies being churned out by many so called Christians!
To those who can still hear the sound of the Trumpet and those within the eternity-minded sheepfold, I am sent to remind us of God’s Charge through Apostle Paul.
Philippians 4: 8, 9“Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things. Those things, which ye have both learned, and received, and heard, and seen in me, do: and the God of peace shall be with you”
My Goal Is God.
